4/25/2023 0 Comments Genre of the book the journey backThat kind of definition is the biggest problemĪlso explained by our community members in an annotation, the book in question is 아프니까 청춘이다, which literally translates to “It hurts because it’s youth.” It’s a real, best-selling book in South Korea, written by Seoul National University (the “Havard” of South Korea) professor, Kim Rando. RM then directly calls out one such self-help book: It’s great that they tell you the ways, but I think the way they deliver the words can be dangerous. Those books, their style of writing is pretty much the same, they tell you to “live this way”. At one time, I read a lot of those books, but you can’t impose your rules to anyone. And I wrote in my lyrics too, that I don’t really hate books about self-help books. But there isn’t a book that is about my life. RM reading a book – BTS (방탄소년단)īeing a big reader (source: any Bangtan Bomb, ever), RM has formed quite a strong opinion about self-help books, or life-coaching books:Īctually, I’ve read quite a lot. You were born as a hero, why are you trying to become a slave? If you look less at wits, there are a lot of things that change Your dreams your hobbies, can they understand? They have no backbone and believe other’s words I hate self-help books more than anything in the world All the interview materials are also presented in their English Translations. RM has done a lot of interviews and clarification on the mixtape and the song “Do You.” Thus this song highlight attempts to both analyze and organize all the information extracted from various interviews. Note: The English Translation of the song is referred to in this Song Highlight for convenience purposes. “Do You” particularly was inspired by India Arie’s 2013 song “Just Do You.” Being the song represents the entire message for this mixtape, let’s then try to examine RM and how he portrayed himself through his lyrics. A BTS album is something that’s not just my own, and it needs to fit the group’s concept, which is why there are many things to think about, but since this mixtape is mine, I tried to self-examine the closest to my true self and work on it comfortably. Even if there were lyrics that could start a controversy, I just went with it if it wasn’t too harsh. I tried to work on it as comfortably as I could. RM also mentioned the following to the Korean Hip-hop magazine 힙합플레이야 (Hiphopplaya): The mixtape samples 8 tracks produced by other people, hence why it especially found its safe haven on Soundcloud, where copyright wouldn’t have given RM any trouble. RM was released exactly 8 years ago on March 20, 2015, back when our favorite Ilsan rapper still went by the name Rap Monster. SoundCloud allowed, especially the members of the rap line, to release sampled, provocative, and political tracks that didn’t need to comply with Korea’s broadcasting guidelines.Īmong these gunpowder-packed tracks are several fan favorites such as “Born Singer”, j-hope’s “One Verse”, agust D’s “마지막 (The Last),“ and the song of our article today, RM’s “Do You” from RM’s Self-titled Debut Mixtape RM. Let’s go back for a second, back to the times of SoundCloud-back when BTS were exclusively using the platform to release their solo music and mixtapes.
